While Leadership West graduates can be found engaged in various service projects and events throughout the year, the Leadership West Alumni Association oversees a “Leadership Taking Ownership” regional impact service project once per year where we invite all alumni to come help us make an impact on a particular location in need.

This single-day event provides West Valley leaders the chance to “get in the dirt” so to speak and join their fellow Leadership West alumni as we all “take ownership” and send the message that leadership isn’t all just meetings and conference calls.

Speak Up, Stand Up, Save a Life Conference – January 21, 2020

It is shocking that in Arizona, suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth 10-34 years old. Did you now in Arizona, we lose a teenager to suicide every 5.5 days, and for every completed suicide, it is estimated that there are over 200 attempts. Additionally, 1 in 5 children will be bullied in the upcoming school year, and we haven’t even touched upon the challenges of Mental Health, Eating Disorders, and Substance Abuse facing our youth. These are the reasons why the Stand Up, Speak Up, Save a Life conference and movement was started, and why we are asking for you to join us in partnership and support. The impetus for this conference came about when three colleagues from the Leadership West Program started looking at reports and data on how 768 Arizona children died last year and that 39 percent of the deaths were preventable. Often cited was the stigma of not being able to or comfortable asking for help as well as the missed warning signs that seemed to accompany every school tragedy. This was a call to action.

This year the demand is greater than ever. Our conference is on January 21, 2020 at Grand Canyon University and we plan to include over 5,000 students, staff, families and communities from public, private, and charter schools, as well as youth groups. The program will have many lasting components after the conference including parent and community meetings across the Valley, and partnerships with local organizations to help everyone Stand Up, Speak Up and Save Lives.

In order to achieve this, we need approximately 500 volunteers and facilitators.  For more information to register or join the movement, go to www.speakstandsave.com.

“When I joined Leadership West, I had no idea of the impact it would have on me in my life, both personally and professionally. Besides meeting some of my closest friends, we have the opportunity to make an impact in the West Valley every day as part of our civic ownership mindset. One way is through the third annual Speak Up, Stand Up, Save a Life Conference at Grand Canyon University on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 from 9:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. This conference is near and dear to my heart and others from Leadership West because it was started and grown organically by some of our colleagues in Class XXII and has grown and impacted over 380,000 students in anti-bullying and suicide prevention efforts in schools throughout Arizona. As a parent, I always want to know my children are safe and secure and being involved gives me the chance to help my children feel empowered to speak up. We need your help to make this a reality for the 4,000 attendees this year. Please volunteer to assist at the conference and give your Leadership West colleagues support for their life-changing efforts.”  – Shelby Duplessis, President Leadership West.
